Ocean Prime Celebrates One Year in The District

Time flies when you’re having fun and it has already been a year since Ocean Prime joined the District’s dining elite with a grand opening celebration. We spoke with Ocean Prime DC’s Private Dining and Events Manager Rachel Norman on the past year and what’s to come for the restaurant.

1) Why do you think Ocean Prime has become such a dining destination within the past year?

In the anticipation of our One Year Anniversary, things have really come full circle for us here. With so many truly great culinary options in this town, the fact that we lead with our genuine hospitality, making them feel so special when they are here–and keep them so well fed–has been key to us being so welcomed in the DMV area. I think this has really resonated with our guests and I cannot wait to see what next year brings.

2) What are your favorite items on the menu? What are some of your favorite seasonal items coming up on the fall menu?

Our Tuna tartare is hands down my go-to. When I arrive early in the morning to find Chef Jason cutting the tuna for the day, I already am hungry for lunch. It is so crisp and refreshing with our wasabi avocado and ponzu, the crunch of the wontons in every bite, perfection.

I look forward to the Fall mainly for the food! The Chef team seems to be incredibly inspired coming in to the season and are always coming up with a new dessert feature or bringing in new products. Swordfish season is here and sometimes you can get Pumpkin Swordfish! No, it doesn’t taste like pumpkin, but it’s so fun to see the chefs play on fall’s favorite flavors and create something new for our guests. (yes, I know, I am basic).

3) Favorite guest/private dining memory?

That is hard! I guess I would say the repeats, they become our regulars; our Raving Fans. I have been fortunate enough to work with the same guests many times over and in different properties. I have had the opportunity to plan events for the same guests in Boston, Orlando & DC. We love being their go-to, the place they know will execute their event flawlessly and effortlessly every time, being consistent is undervalued in this business.

Private dining memories; I would say it is not often that I get to plan such important life events like wedding rehearsals or receptions, but when I do, I love it. People are entrusting me to create their perfect memory, I feel so lucky that they chose us and do everything in my power to deliver.

4) What do you love about living in DC?

Recently moving from VA to DC (Adams Morgan) and originally from the South, I truly appreciate the sense of community the District has. One can never be bored here. There is always a market or festival to attend or a new show playing at a local theater. I enjoy the smallness of D.C. all while still living in a thriving city center. It certainly is surreal at times, and I love it.

5) What do you look forward to in the upcoming year at Ocean Prime DC?

I look forward to becoming one of those pillar restaurants in our community. To continue our charitable partnerships and build our community relationships even more. We have had the opportunity to connect with so many people at different cornerstone events in the District this past year and it was invaluable to our success. We are so thankful D.C. has pulled up a chair to our table, and we look forward to many more years.
